SEPAC Award Nominations–Due Tuesday 5/17


Do you want to help recognize the amazing work of an NPS or out-of-district staff member in supporting your special education student(s)? If so, Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) would love for you to nominate this staff member by Tuesday May 17th! Submit nominations using the Google Nomination Form.

Each nominee will receive the text of the nomination in an email and messages of thanks from Mayor Fuller, Superintendent Fleishman, the School Committee, and the SEPAC Board, as well as a printed award and a small gift.

These awards are a way to honor our Newton Public Schools (NPS) and out-of-district staff who have gone the extra mile to support our special education students. Nominees span a wide range of staff, including teachers, aides, BTs, therapists, bus drivers, crossing guards, administrators, other support staff, etc. All nominees receive an award. Please contact the SEPAC Board with any questions. Thank you so much for your participation!

Burr Magnets Update


We wanted to share a quick update on the BURR car magnets that were promised as part of the Wolf Fund fundraising. Like so many things lately, we are being impacted by supply chain issues—but the magnets are still coming! NSF is a non-profit that raises funds to advance educational excellence and equity throughout Newton's public schools. MAY FAIR


Yesterday's May Fair was a great success and we want to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped make that happen. We couldn't have done it without an amazing May Fair committee this year, led by Deanna Salemme.  In addition, so many members of our community volunteered their time to bake for the bake sale, run a game, set up or clean up, and more. This event takes a large number of volunteers and our community really came through. 

Congratulations to Xavier Rutt and Tea Fujisaki for their wonderful cakes that won the cake decorating contest.  And a big thank you to our guest judges Mayor Ruthanne Fuller and Sloane Sheffer Goldhagen. 

And new this year- the Pie in the Face was SO MUCH FUN!!! Thank you to Ms McMahon, Ms Robinson, Ms Young and Ms Johal for being such good sports!

PTO 22-23 Board Elections are Coming!


Board elections for the next school year are coming May 18. This year we are looking for a Co-President, and two Community Events Chairs.  The board is comprised of 10-12 volunteers who are elected for a 2 year term. These roles generally require 8-15 hrs/month of commitment, including monthly board meetings, and various committee/community meetings. We generally meet in the evenings outside of business hours (usually via zoom), and flex to support each other when other life demands need to take precedence. If you want to help support great community events like BooFest, the Burr World Cultures Event, STEAMFair, Creative Arts and Sciences and more- we'd love to work with you!  Reach out to anyone on the board or email info@burrpto.org for more information by Friday May 13.

Len Cabral Storyteller – May 9, 2022


Monday, May 9 from 8:45am – 9:45am, Grades 4 and 5

Cabral, an African American storyteller, has been enchanting Newton student audiences for years. He presents African, and world and original folk tales with a spellbinding style that includes audience participation, movement, and dramatic flair. He has authored two books, Anansi’s Narrow Waist and
Len Cabral’s Storytelling Book.

Join us! Parents are encouraged to attend, but no younger siblings, please. Thank you for your cooperation.

May Fair Is Next Saturday!


Join us for a community-building event filled with fun, games, and food on Saturday May 7th from 12–3pm! There will be bounce houses, arts and crafts, face painting, games, pizza and hot dogs for sale, a bake sale, and prizes! This year we have also added a Pie-in-the-Face game! 

To make this event a roaring success we need volunteers to run it - sell pizza/baked goods/tickets, work a game (we have instructions and most are pretty simple), etc. Please considering signing up to run a game or table for an hour while your kids enjoy all the activities!

This beloved event is open to all, not just Burr School families so bring family and friends! Bracelets will be $10/child or $25/family and will allow children to participate in the carnival games, bounce house, "Hot Cakes" game, and crafts. Adults and children too young to play games do not need bracelets. Bracelets will be for sale at the event- cash only. If you prefer you can purchase a bracelet in advance HERE .

Consider participating in the Cake Contest- This year's theme is Children's Books... bring a decorated cake/cupcakes for the judging at 12:30. We'll award a prize for favorite cake grades K-2 and 3-5. After the judging we'll give the cakes away as part of the "Hot Cakes" game. Sign up HERE

Walk/Bike/Bus to School Day—May 4th


Join students across the country in celebrating healthy transportation options by walking, rolling, biking or taking the bus to school on Wednesday, May 4. 

Newton Safe Routes to School (SRTS) works to promote walking, biking, and taking the bus to school through encouragement, education, infrastructure improvements, and safety enforcement. 
We hope to create a healthy community for everyone.
