 THANK YOU BOO FEST VOLUNTEERS

Thank You, Thank you, Thank You!!!!!!

We want to thank you all for a spooktacular Boo Fest 2017 and for making this year’s  Halloween party a night to remember!   Partygoers visited our many attractions including the Mad Scientist Lab, Fortune Teller booths, and Teacher’s Photo Station.  They made crafts, played games, ate treats, saw roving witches and a zombie, walked the Spookwalk and more!

Thank you for coming to Boo Fest and for all your various forms of donations and generosity.  It really does take a village and then some to pull this event together.  From Set Up to Clean Up and everything prior, in between, and after, we are grateful for your support and could not have done it without you!

Happy Halloween!

Your Boo Crew,
Louisa Hunt, Cristal Balis, Stacey Richard, Renee Krikorian, Tamika Olszewski, Molly & Spencer Poole, Brenna Fisk, and Christine Kwan

School Health Newsletter

Communicating with the School Nurse

In order for the school nurse to be as well prepared as possible to care for students coming to the health room, it is helpful to have the “big picture” perspective for each child. Parents and guardians should know they have an open invitation to communicate with the school nurse both about physical changes such as significant illness, hospitalization, injury, and medication (even if not taken at school), and about social and emotional changes.

Examples include changes in the family structure such as a new sibling, parental separation, illness/death in the family or a parent traveling. It is also helpful for the nurse to know if a student is having trouble adjusting to school or if a parent is concerned about bullying or classroom issues.

The goal for the school nurse is to keep students in school whenever possible. This “big picture” kind of information, along with phone calls for parent consultation, is helpful to achieve this goal.

Additional tips for communicating with the school nurse:

For urgent or time-sensitive matters, please call. Occasionally there is a substitute nurse who cannot access the email of the regular school nurse.
Parents should drop off medication directly to the school nurse instead of sending it with the student.
Keep contact information such as cell phone and work phone numbers updated.
Let’s keep in touch to meet the needs of your child.

To reach the Burr School Nurse, Diane Best, RN, please call her at 617-559-9364 or email her at Diane_Best@newton.12.ma.us.

 THE BURR PTO PRESENTS

Creative Arts & Sciences—Monday, Oct. 30

Mark your calendars! This year's Creative Arts and Sciences Concert Series, New England Percussion Ensemble's Language of the Ancients will be here on Monday, October 30. 9:00 for K-2 and 10:00 for 3-5. All are welcome!

The Language of the Ancients takes students on a journey through time. With recreations of prehistoric log drums to the electric vibraphone, the ensemble reaches across time and continents. Rhythms and percussive instruments come from Africa, Europe, Asia, South America, an the United States. The exploration of this truly ancient "language" travels from the familiar to the unfamiliar with imagination, inventiveness, and creativity. Students will hear new sounds; some loud and spirit shaking, some soft and haunting, throughout this performance of multicultural music on percussive instruments.

All Creative Arts & Sciences programs are funded by the PTO and the Wolf Fund so if you haven't yet, please give to the Wolf Fund today! https://www.burrpto.org/support-us

Parents are welcome to attend, but no younger siblings please.

Does Your Child Have an IEP or 504 Plan?

Then check out the Newton SEPAC (Special Education Parent Advisory Council) at newtonpac.org.

We are a volunteer organization of parents of children with special needs from preschool through high school. We run an online forum where parents can ask other parents about special education programs, issues, policies, and resources. We also sponsor monthly informational meetings and work directly with the school administration regarding our children’s education.

We are also in need of a parent representative from Burr! If you are interested in the position or would like more information about the SEPAC in general, please contact Liaison Coordinator Kim Gallaugher at momofiggy@hotmail.com or 617-335-8140
