Principal's Letter

May 27, 2020

Dear Burr Families,

Over the past weeks, we have been carefully planning for the closure of Burr classrooms for the summer and a safe way to return student belongings.  Burr staff will return to the building in shifts between Tuesday, May 26, and Friday, June 12 to organize student belongings and close up classrooms.  Please note that this may impact live Zoom meetings schedules as they complete this work. Individual teachers will communicate any schedule changes to their students.  On Tuesday, June 9th families will have an opportunity to retrieve student belongings according to the following schedule and protocol.

Picking Up Student Belongings

The Burr Blue Zone (school side) including the bus parking area will be used for picking up student belongings. A schedule organized by last name will be used.  In this way, families with students in multiple grades will be able to retrieve everything at once.  Belongings will be organized in the gym and the cafeteria.  Please pull your vehicle all the way to the end of the building by the dumpsters.

Families are asked to have a clearly labeled sign taped to the front passenger window of their vehicle that lists all student names (first and last) prominently.

Wearing masks and practicing physical distancing, staff will bring student belongings to the trunk of each vehicle. Families are asked to please remain inside their vehicles.

Based on an approximate estimate of student numbers, the schedule for families is as follows:
Date: Tuesday, June 9   - Blue Zone

  • 9:00-9:45 Last Names A-C
  • 9:45-10:30 Last Names D-I
  • 10:30-11:15 Last Names J-M
  • 11:15-12:00 Last Names N-R
  • 12:30 -1:45 Last Names S-U
  • 1:45 -2:30 Last Names V-Z

Belongings of families that do not come at the designated time will be stored.  Families can email me to arrange an alternate time, though you are strongly encouraged to adhere to the given schedule. Thank you for making every effort to do so.

Returning School Supplies

Two large recycling bins have been placed outside the front of the school building next to the ramp leading to the lobby entrance. One is labeled for library books and the other for teachers’ materials.

Over the next few weeks, please return library books and any classroom materials that belong to the school. Materials being returned to a teacher should be placed in a plastic bag clearly labeled with the teacher’s name. Many of you are within walking distance and may want to take a walk over to the building to drop off these items in the next few days. To ensure everyone’s safety, please DO NOT come to Burr return items on June 9th. That day is for pick up ONLY and families must stay in their cars.

Thank you for your understanding as we navigate through this unusual school closing. Your patience, flexibility, and grace are appreciated.

All the best,

Mindy

Principal's Newsletter—May 15, 2020

May 15, 2020

Dear Burr Families,

Early this week Dr. Fleishman sent out a letter sharing some updates to our learning plans that were informed by feedback from families, teachers, and the phase 3 guidelines from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). The notable changes for elementary school are:

  • All students will have at least 4 opportunities per week to connect live with a staff member, one of these connections will be with a specialist. Classroom teachers will decide what form their additional session will take. Specialist sessions will be on the same day and at the same time each week. Your child’s classroom teacher will include details for the additional meetings in their Sunday night email.
  • Teachers have started to introduce new content and skill into their learning plans. They have been asked to focus on a limited number of key topics and skills with the goal being to prepare students for the next grade. During last week’s Parent Principal Check-In meetings several parents asked for more information about the skills identified as prerequisites for student success in the next grade level. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has prepared Massachusetts Elementary Prerequisite Content Standards to guide the work of districts during the COVID 19 pandemic. Please remember, we DO NOT expect parents to teach these skills. Students will be assessed when we return to school and instruction will be modified to meet their needs.

Distance learning has required children and adults to become fluent in using a variety of online programs and platforms.  Sometimes these technologies are glitchy which can be frustrating since we are so dependent on them.  Understandably, some of you have expressed the need for additional technology tutorials for yourselves or your children. Please see the Family Tutorials and Links on the Newton Public Schools website. If you or your child continue to need support, please be sure to reach out to me or your child’s classroom teacher.

Finally, I’d like to restate that supporting students’ connection with school and providing social-emotional support for them, remains a top priority for the Burr staff.  Our mental health team has been sharing resources and providing support during this difficult time. I  asked them to pull these resources together in one place so families can easily access them.  I’m excited to share the new Burr Mental Health website and hope you will find it helpful.

As always, please be sure to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. I hope you have a nice weekend and can get outside to enjoy the beautiful weather.

Best,

Mindy

Updated Learning Plan and Summer/Fall Plans

Dear NPS Families,

I write to share two important updates with you. The first is an update on our distance learning plan based upon both updated guidance from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and survey feedback from families, staff, and high school students. The second update is on planning for summer and the 2020-21 school year.

Distance Learning

Thank you to all families who took the time to provide feedback on our distance learning plan. Below are some key takeaways from the staff, family, and high school student surveys:

Key Survey Findings

  • For staff, one of the significant challenges of distance learning is concern for vulnerable students and ensuring equitable access and engagement for all students.
  • The majority of parents/guardians responded that the amount of time that their child is interacting with teachers in real time is not enough.
  • The majority of parents/guardians at elementary and middle school responded that the amount of time their child is doing work or activities provided by teachers is just right. At preschool, the majority said it is not enough. High school parents/guardians were closely split between not enough and just right.
  • For high school students, 84% found the amount of work being provided as either just right or a bit too much. 58% of students are spending 2-4 hours per day “doing school.” 76% of all students find the challenge level of learning activities just right.

Updates to Distance Learning Plan

Given the state guidance, along with the feedback above, and working closely with our NTA partners, below is a list of the key changes that will be implemented as we proceed with our distance learning plan:

  • As many have already begun, teachers and staff will give students opportunities to learn new content and skills, while continuing to review and reinforce key concepts. The focus will be on a limited number of key topics and skills to prepare students for the next grade.
  • In our elementary schools, weekly schedules will be revised so that students will have at least four opportunities per week to connect live with a staff member, one of whom will be a specialist.
  • In our middle schools, we will add a weekly advisory or community meeting of 30 minutes at all schools to promote engagement and connection and to support students as they organize their work for the week.
  • At the high school level, the class schedule will be adjusted to allow classes to run for up to 30 minutes as educationally appropriate.

Our distance learning plan continues to place connection with school and social emotional support for students as a top priority. We know that families continue to experience this pandemic very differently and we seek to respect those differences. Providing regular connections with teachers and staff, as well as meaningful academic work, will be the focus of our plan for the remainder of the academic year.

Summer and Fall Planning

We know that you have many questions about plans for both summer programming and the 2020-21 school year. While there are more questions than answers at this point, please know that our primary consideration will be the health and wellness of our students, staff, and school communities. We will be working closely with health officials to plan for school opening, while understanding that our plans will need to be flexible given the unknown duration of this public health crisis.

For the summer, we are awaiting state guidance on school programs, camps, and other services. We expect that some of our programs will need to be remote, with potentially some opportunity for in person interaction. We will provide you updates and information as we receive guidance and determine what is possible.

For the fall, we are creating planning teams to prepare for the many possible scenarios. One area of focus will be operations, including building cleaning protocols, bussing, food service, social distancing protocols, among many others. A second key area of focus will be our educational model and how public health considerations will impact scheduling, course content, and social-emotional support for our students. This team will develop a range of scenarios to accommodate the various guidelines that may be put in place to protect public health. We will continue to keep you updated as our planning moves forward.

As we embark upon the final six weeks of this truly unprecedented school year, I am struck by the creativity of our staff, the resilience of our students, and the kindness of our school community. While the past 8 weeks have been incredibly stressful, sometimes frustrating and sad, and always uncertain, I am hopeful that some of the life lessons learned by our children will serve them well. I hope you and your family are healthy and well.

Sincerely,

David Fleishman

 THE BURR PTO PRESENTS

Please Help Support Burr Families—Burr Pantry

Dear Burr Community,

We want to make sure that all Burr families have the food and resources they need to stay healthy during this unusual time. Many of you have reached out to find out how you can help, and we are so grateful to be part of a community that truly looks after one another.

Therefore, we are still organizing a food/household goods drop-off each week to support those families in our community who could use a little extra help right now. We are working with Burr Social Worker Nicki Eastburn (who is coordinating distribution directly with the families), in order to make sure she has food and supplies to pass along.

Every Tuesday we are collecting goods between 8am-8pm at the following two locations:

Cristal and Jill Balis

15 Elm St

(Grey and white townhome off River Street)

(773) 520-0049 - Cristal’s cell

Spencer and Molly Poole

451 Wolcott St

(Two family house, left door)

(617) 824-0980 - Spencer’s cell

To maintain social distancing requirements, please place donations on the front porch and send a text to let us know.

Please visit the following link to view a suggested list of donations: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-TXCrikDPppmj-lslZv6slMEkvTpQssd6LsV0K73Ydk

We have split the list up by last name to ensure a more even distribution. We realize some of these items may not be available, but just appreciate any and all contributions you are able to make. Please note that this list will be updated weekly as necessary to reflect current needs/requests!

We have also added a Donation page for those families that don't want to leave the house but would still like to donate money towards grocery store gift cards.

Principal's Newsletter

May 1, 2020

Dear Families,

We’re all slowly coming to terms with the fact that school will not open for the rest of the school year. I’ve heard from teachers, parents, and students, and so many of us are sad and disappointed.  We’re mourning the loss of all the wonderful events and activities that were planned for the spring. It’s hard to believe that we won’t be able to send off our fifth graders with the traditional Moving On Ceremony or celebrate June with Color Day.  It’s sobering to think that children and teachers will only be meeting virtually until September when they will all be in new classrooms and some in new schools.

We must now begin to think creatively and plan for the rest of this school year.  We must still celebrate special milestones and plan memorable events for all grade levels.  Teachers and district administrators are sharing ideas across schools and exploring different options.  We are also figuring out efficient ways of preparing for the opening of school in September.

At this time of year, we always begin the process of gathering information for classroom placement for the next academic year.  As usual, you are invited to provide some input.  This year, we will do it electronically on the Burr School Optional Classroom Placement Input Form.  This form will be due by May 8.

Please know, your child’s placement is given careful consideration by the Burr staff, and completing the form is OPTIONAL. The form is simply to ensure we do not miss information that may not be available or known by your child’s current teachers.  To understand how we do placement and the things that we consider to form balanced classes, see the Placement Process Explained for Parents document.

Forms submitted after May 8 may not be considered. You should be aware that the information will be shared with the teachers in both the sending and receiving grades.

Next week, I’d like to offer some time for parents to check in with me and chat with other parents about how distance learning is working in their home. Sometimes, it’s easier to join a discussion than it is to send an email when you have something on your mind.  Below are scheduled times for virtual meetings. Burr math coach, Ms. Feroleto, and literacy specialist, Ms. Wong-Tucker, who have both been working on district curriculum teams, will join us. I think organizing our Check-In meetings by grade levels will allow for targeted and meaningful discussions.
