THE BURR PTO PRESENTS

Burr Book Fair Starts This Week!

The Burr Book Fair will run from November 28-December 2 and children can shop for books during their library time that week. Parents can shop November 29th at 7:30am and November 30th from 5-7pm.  There will still be an opportunity to buy books online for two weeks after the fair ends.

Check out the Burr Book Fair website here for more information!

IMPORTANT: This year, there is a NEW option for how students can buy books at the book fair. You can set up an e-wallet at home. This digital payment option can be used at the in-school Book Fair or online at the Virtual Book Fair. You can create your e-wallet by clicking here.  You can also use cash or checks made out to Burr PTO.

Want to contribute to your classroom or a specialist's "wishlist"? Find their eWallet here to contribute and teachers will use those funds to buy books for their classrooms!

The Wolf Fund is our annual giving campaign for the Burr PTO and runs from October to January.  The money raised provides the majority of funding for PTO activities throughout the year. Our goal is to raise $25,000 through the Wolf Fund with at least half of Burr families giving a gift of any amount

Spotlight: Giving Tuesday Donor Match Starts TOMORROW!

As we enter the holiday season, we’d like to remind everyone that Tuesday, November 29th is Giving Tuesday—a global movement that unleashes the power of radical generosity to transform communities and the world. One way you can support our Burr School community is by giving to the Wolf Fund, which makes Burr PTO activities possible throughout the year. With just short of $5,000 raised from 28 families, we are 20% toward our $25,000 goal! This year, we’d like to move even closer to our goal by issuing a Giving Tuesday Wolf Fund Challenge:

The first $60 of each donation up to $2,000 for Giving Tuesday will be matched!

So please consider making your tax-deductible gift of any amount to the Wolf Fund between November 21 and December 1. Every child in every grade benefits from your gift to the Burr PTO.

Your gift in any amount helps support our school community.
  • Give online. Click here to use your credit card, Paypal, or Venmo.
  • Text BURRPTO to 53-555 to donate.
  • Send check made out to Burr PTO to school in your child's folder.
  • Mail a check made out to Burr PTO to Burr PTO / 171 Pine St. / Auburndale, MA 02466.

SUSTAINABILITY

Helpsy bins were placed at 14 school building locations just prior to the start of the school year. In the first three months, the collection bins diverted a total of 55,271 pounds of unwanted textiles from the waste stream and generated $6,079.81 in revenue!

As a reminder, the Massachusetts textile ban went into effect on November 1, 2022. This means that textiles are banned from disposal or transport for disposal in Massachusetts. The textile collection bins help Newton comply with the ban, keep textiles out of the waste stream, and generate revenue to support sustainability initiatives in the schools.

Find out more on the NPS Sustainability webpage.

Roll Request Redux!

Thanks to everyone who sent in toilet paper and paper towel rolls and brown paper bags - Ms. Ellis is grateful! She could still use more, so keep them coming - save any you have from the Thanksgiving break, and send them in next week!

Please join our next Burr FORJ Meeting, where we will be joined by some of our fantastic teachers to learn about the anti-racist curriculum making an impact at each grade level at Burr. Please register here in advance of the meeting. We will discuss topics such as:
  • Why does Burr have an Anti-Racist curriculum?
  • What is an Anti-Racist curriculum, and how does it fit into the other things Burr teachers?
  • How do teachers talk with children about race in a way that they can understand?
  • What race-related topics do teachers address with students?
  • How can I support the anti-racist work with my own children?

Spotlight: Staff Appreciation

We think Burr has some of the greatest teachers and staff! They welcome our kids each day, create a foundation for the community at Burr, foster a love of learning that will last a lifetime, and many many other important tasks.

The PTO uses support from the Wolf Fund to help show the Burr teachers and staff our appreciation each year with staff breakfasts, flowers, and more to be sure they know just how much their work matters.

Newton Safe Routes to School would like your input!

The Mayor recently designated $2 million in ARPA funding for traffic calming that includes adding crosswalks on Webster St. and making the crosswalks on Lexington St. safer. Please take a few minutes to fill out **this Google Form** letting us know where the City should focus its resources on these two streets. Please submit responses by November 15.

The City will make the final decisions about where to install these safety improvements as not all locations are appropriate because of sight lines, drains, trees, etc. Newton Safe Routes to School is simply providing recommendations.

You can also reach out to the Safe Routes Task Force at newtonsaferoutes@gmail.com or find out more about our work at www.NewtonSafeRoutes.org.

Election Day Bake Sale—Tuesday, November 8th!

It’s going to be a beautiful, sunny day for the Burr Election Day Bake Sale and we’re planning on having our table outside. There will be coffee at drop off, pizza by the slice at dismissal, and of course mouthwatering baked goods.

We need donations of baked goods for the bake sale! Homemade and store bought are both great!
🧁 Click here to sign up.

We need volunteers to take shifts at the bake sale table. Even 30 minutes is a big help. Feel free to bring your child along! Click here to sign up.

The Election Day Bake Sale is an important PTO fundraiser. We need your help to make it a success!
