Back to School Picnic Wrap Up!

This year's Back to School Picnic may have been the largest one any of us can recall - we ordered almost 200 pizzas and somewhere around 400 frozen yogurts! We are thankful for everyone who pitched in, as well as everyone who visited the Volunteer Tent and signed up to help out this year. Special thank you to our Back to School Picnic Committee: Angie Kim, Gina Medaglia, Jon Spack, Sonia Yung, and our volunteer crew: Benny Lee, Jay Benson, Camai Mazzulla, Fiona St. John-Parsons and Annie Chivatakarn.

All volunteers who signed up before noon yesterday were given entries in our Volunteer drawing for a $50 gift card to Ward 4. The winner chosen by the random name selector was Deanna Salemme! Congratulations, Deanna!

BooFest 2021 Update!

The Boo Crew held their first kick off meeting this past week to brainstorm an outdoor BooFest.  While still in early planning stages, we hope to have a costume dance party, crafts, pumpkin carving contest, concessions (baked and prepackaged), games as well as bring back some of our traditional BooFest favorites, such as the Fortune Teller and the Mad Scientist.  We are also introducing a Trunk or Treat!  To do all of these things requires MANY volunteers.  Please see this sign up genius and think about how you might be able to help!

Burr FORJ Update

Hello Burr FORJ Friends!

A special thank you to Mindy Johal and Alice Wong Tucker for attending our meeting this past Monday night to share updates about protocols, communication, anti-racist curriculum, and teacher trainings. Thank you also to everyone who attended, shared their name stories and voices, and helped to get our working groups off and running.

In case you missed it, below is a list of Burr FORJ upcoming events. Mark your calendars!

More about Newton's Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration:
Join your friends and neighbors on Monday, October 11, from 12-5 pm at Albemarle Field in Newton for a family-oriented celebration of Indigenous culture, art, and history!

Indigenous Peoples Day Newton 2021 will will spotlight and celebrate the music, dance, poetry, and the visual art of diverse Native artists that currently live in the Northeast. It will be an outdoor, daytime, family-oriented cultural and spiritual celebration that is open, accessible, and welcoming to all residents of Newton and neighboring towns.

The goal is to make concrete our city's recent recognition of Indigenous Peoples Day as an official city holiday. The intention is for this event to become a beloved annual event on our city's calendar.

Over 40 artists, speakers, vendors, and community organizations will attend. Refreshments can be purchased from onsite food truck(s). Spend the afternoon in celebration, ceremony, and support of the rich Indigenous traditions that are an enduring and vibrant facet of our community!

We are also in need of volunteers the day of the event. Interested in taking a shift? Please sign up using this form, and our volunteer coordinator will be in touch.

Warm regards,
The Indigenous Peoples Day Newton Planning Committee

Best,
Deanna Hoffman on behalf of Burr FORJ

Reminders from Safe Routes to School

Please keep drop-off and pickup safe and smooth by following Blue Zone rules and local parking rules. Going rogue with parking creates congestion, prevents busses from reaching the school, and can create dangerous situations for our children. Thank you for your help!

Volunteers Needed

We are so excited to kick off this school year and bring the Burr Community together after a summer away. This year the PTO would like to hold most of our "traditional" community events and activities, although they may need to look a little different. To do that, we need your help.

We still need a few room parents, as well as parents to help with BooFest, Creative Arts & Sciences, hospitality, fundraising, newsletter editing, and others.

We appreciate as little or as much help as you are able to give. Please take a look at our current volunteer needs at https://bit.ly/BurrVolunteers and see how you might be able to help make this year a great one for our community. We look forward to working with you!

New Family Welcome Chat
September 9th After Morning Dropoff

All parents are invited to join Principal Johal for a New Family Welcome Chat on Thursday, September 9th, under the tents on the Burr School playground from 8:20 AM to 9:00 AM right after drop-off. This will be a great time to meet parents, both old and new, and PTO leadership.
