Ringmasters December 19 at 11am—First Graders

North American birds of prey are also known as raptors, and their unique characteristics help them to hunt prey. Raptors also have the best eyesight and the sharpest hearing in the animal kingdom. Raptors include eagles, hawks, falcons and owls, and this presentation will incorporate five live birds to teach about predation, the raptors’ place at the top of the food web, their different hunting adaptations, and their often endangered status in a rapidly changing world.

Join us in the Cafetorium! Parents are encouraged to attend, but no younger siblings, please. Thank you for your cooperation.

SAVE THE DATE! The First Ever Burr PTO Diversity Chat on Race: January 9

The first ever Diversity Chat on Race will be held on January 9, 2018 from 7:00-8:45pm

Please join us in the Burr Cafetorium for an evening of insightful and necessary conversation on how we, as parents, and as a community, can create an environment that accepts and celebrates our rich and varied racial diversity. Roland Davis, PhD, Harvard University Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion, and former Burr Dad, will discuss how unconscious bias and stereotype threat can affect academic performance and the steps we can take to minimize its impact on students of color.

Roland has been a clinical therapist and an administrator at both the secondary and post secondary level, and has worked to help institutions improve the experience of students of color academically and socially.

Rabbi Allison Berry of Temple Shalom will also join us to discuss the importance of standing up to antisemitism and racism. Additionally, parents representing other schools involved with the Newton Public School supported group FORJ, Families Organizing For Racial Justice, are also invited to attend.

Burr STEM Fair January 26, 2018: Registration Forms and SAVE THOSE ELECTRONICS!

Registration forms will be sent out in your child's folder this week for the Burr STEM Fair, which will be held on Friday, January 26th, 2018, from 6:30-8pm in the Burr cafetorium. Save the date, and start thinking with your young scientists and engineers about what they want to explore!

Make sure to SAVE YOUR ELECTRONICS!!! Don't throw them away! Last year's reverse engineering table was a fun way for kids to take apart old electronics and see what's inside. Curiosity is the first step in developing a love of technology, so let's have a good full table of stuff to explore this year- bring your old electronics so we can take them apart. Anything other than TV screens or phones (screens may be dangerous).

Also, are you in a STEM-related career field? Want to do a demonstration at the STEM fair? Please e-mail Laura Sexton at laurasexton1@hotmail.com.

Here are some guidelines and ideas and look for registration forms in student folders this week. Forms can be returned in your child's folder.

STEM Fair Guidelines:
~Kid-quality projects only. Parent support is great (and may be necessary for younger students), but let the students take the lead.
~Students can work alone or in teams. Team members can be in different grades.
~Projects can be inventions (a new gadget to solve a problem), displays (show off something cool you know) or question-hypothesis-experiment-conclusion investigations (guess how something works, try it out and see what happens).
~Experiments that need to be done over multiple days are ok. Do them at home, take photos along the way and show off your results at the STEM Fair!
~Each project should fit on a 2’ x 3’ table space and have a kid-quality poster explaining what you did and the science behind it. You can use words, drawings or photos. Do not get hung up on the quality of the poster. Short and simple is best — it will help you explain your project to the other students!
~Be sure to include your name(s) and grade(s) on your poster.
~Projects do not have to work perfectly. It’s the idea that counts.
~Electrical outlets are limited, and not guaranteed. Let us know right away if your project will need electricity.
~Safety is key! Please make sure that your project is safe. We need to ensure the safety of the gym floor too – please ensure all materials are non-toxic, non-staining and non-corrosive. No dry ice is permitted. Nothing explosive please!
~Students are encouraged to be creative and use common household and upcycled materials. Batteries are allowed, but gas, propane and latex is not allowed. Food may be part of the project (but NO nuts, please!).
~The gadget or experiment may not be harmful to any living thing. Projects that appear unsafe will be asked to be removed.

Project set-up time will be 6pm to 6:30pm.

The Wolf Fund is Halfway There!

The Wolf Fund has raised $13,460 as of December 5, 2017. That is just over half of this year's goal. Thank you to everyone who has contributed!

Together, we can raise the remaining $13,459 and reach our goal of $26,000.

How will the PTO spend $26,000 to benefit every child at Burr? By funding
four to five Creative Arts and Sciences curriculum enhancing programs at each grade level and updated technology, including new iPads.

There is still time to make your contribution. You can contribute by sending a check into school in your child’s folder or donate online using this link: https://www.burrpto.org

Thank you to everyone who has contributed and who will contribute. Every contribution matters!

Special Education Parent Advisory Council Liason

Hello Burr Families!

I have recently volunteered to be the Special Education Parent Advisory Council Liaison for the Burr School Community. For those of you who are not aware, SEPAC is an all-volunteer organization of parents of children with disabilities in the Newton School system. The SEPAC sponsors monthly informational meetings, maintains an online discussion group and works with the school administration regarding our children’s special education needs. It provides parents with the opportunity to learn more about special education programs, issues, policies, regulations, and resources.

Liaisons to the SEPAC are in place for each Newton public school and for those attending private and out-of-district schools. If you have a child in special education in Newton and have questions, you can contact me and I will do my best to provide you with information or put you in touch with someone from SEPAC that can answer your questions.

To find out more about the council, go to https://newtonpac.org.

Creative Arts & Sciences 2018 Schedule

The Creative Arts & Sciences (CAS) committee is pleased to announce this year’s fun, educational, and inspirational Creative Arts and Sciences programming. Read our letter with the full upcoming schedule here.

Your children already journeyed through musical time at this year’s Concert Series: New England Percussion Ensemble. In addition, this year each grade will experience 4-5 exciting programs tailored to their grade. Children’s faces light up as scientists, authors, poets, and entertainers offer a real life hands-on extension of what they are learning in the classroom.

Mark your calendars. Don't forget to ask your child questions about what they learned. You'll be surprised with their wealth of information about starfish, butterflies, life in Ghana, the writing process, or origami!  Better yet, come to a presentation and witness the magic yourself.  Parents are always welcome!

All of these curriculum-aligned programs are funded entirely through parents’ donations to the The Wolf Fund. In fact, Creative Arts and Sciences is the largest line item of the PTO budget!  If you have not yet, please donate now.

While the program fees are paid for by the PTO, Creative Arts & Sciences is run completely by parent volunteers. If you have any questions or would like to get more involved, please email your CAS co-chairs or committee members.

Thanks so much for your support, and we hope to see you in the classroom this year.
