The Burr Wolf Fund Needs Your Support

Please look for the Burr Wolf Fund letter in your child's folder this week. The Burr Wolf Fund is the PTO's annual fall fundraiser that raises a significant portion of the PTO's budget and helps pay for the some of PTO's largest and most important  line items: Creative Arts and Sciences, teacher supplies and books for Burr's library.

This year's Burr Wolf Fund goal is to raise $24,000 by January 31, 2019. Please contribute an amount you are comfortable with. We greatly appreciate any and all contributions! Every contribution makes a difference in our students' experience at Burr!

Everyone who donates to the Wolf Fund by October 31 will be entered into a drawing to win a fabulous Family Game Night Basket.

You can contribute to the Wolf Fund by sending a check (made payable to Burr PTO) in your child's folder or from the "Donate" button on the PTO's website at  https://www.burrpto.org

If you have any questions, please email the Burr Wolf Fund team at wolffund@burrpto.org.

FROM NURSE BEST

Shoo Flu

Get the flu vaccine at school, not the flu!

The BURR SCHOOL flu shot clinic will be on October 17th. Each student to be vaccinated must have a parent/guardian complete two forms:
1. Consent/Screening form
2. Vaccine administration record/Insurance form.

Forms are available in the school nurse’s office, or may be downloaded at www.newtonma.gov/flu . You may electronically complete the form, print, sign and return. Forms are due to the School Nurse October 15th.

Only the flu shot (no nasal spray) will be offered at school this year. The Vaccine Information Statement about  the flu shot, and additional information for families including tips on preparing kids for a shot is available at www.newtonma.gov/flu or in the school nurse’s office. There is no cost to receive the vaccine, but insurance information is requested. All students, regardless of insurance status, are invited to receive vaccine with parent permission.

Students are not required to receive flu vaccine, however the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends flu vaccine for all people age 6 months and up. There are many places to get a flu vaccine including at school, your primary health care provider or community clinics. For additional clinic dates for the whole family, visit www.newtonma.gov/flu.

In addition to vaccination, it is important to practice good hand hygiene and cough etiquette by washing hands often; covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue or the arm; and staying home when sick.

For more flu prevention tips, talk to the school nurse or check out these websites: www.newtonma.gov/flu and www.cdc.gov/flu

VOLUNTEERS WANTED

We need your help!

We have a lot of upcoming events without any teams to run them.  We can't do it without help from the Burr community.  Here are some roles that we're looking to fill:
  • Hospitality (ongoing) - Provide coffee for Parent/Principal Coffee, coordinate the Back to School breakfast, and Teacher Appreciation week.
  • Moveathon (date TBA) - We are bringing back the Moveathon and partnering with the student council! The student council will be voting on a charity and all proceeds will benefit it. This will be a fun event to coordinate.
  • Book Fair (November) - It's back at Burr this year, but with a new, local vendor!  It's going to be super fun, but we need some team members to help coordinate.
  • Online Auction (January) - We need additional team members for this popular fundraiser.  We can use help soliciting donations, inputting items into the website, and delivering items to winners.
  • Talent Show Concessions (March) - Parent volunteers are needed to sell refreshments at the talent show.
  • World Culture Potluck (April) - This year’s World Culture Celebration is a potluck dinner only.  (The full World Culture Fair is every other year)  The volunteer team coordinates the signups for food and helps plan the evening’s entertainment (music, parent discussions about various food dishes, etc).
  • Garden Classroom (May) - We need a co-coordinator for the Garden Classroom.  You've probably seen the beautiful sunflowers in the garden this year.  Come be a part of it this spring!
  • Color Day Popsicle Coordinator (June) - This coordinator will be responsible for purchasing and bringing popsicles to Burr for Color Day!
  • Wolf Fund (ongoing) - We need a co-coordinator for Burr's important fundraising effort.  This will be starting soon and the Wolf Fund committee could use a helping hand.
After you’ve had a chance to review the different volunteer areas, please click here to fill out our Volunteer Interest Form!

Safe Routes to School Rep Needed for Burr

I am reaching out to you in hopes of of finding a Safe Routes to School Task Force representative from Burr. SRTS is working to increase the number of students walking and biking to school for their health (active transportation) + reduce congestion and improve air quality by reducing the number of vehicles arriving at school. We work as a group with NPS and the city on any number of issues such as fixing safety issues, supporting crossing guards, resolving snow clearing problems, conducting bike and pedestrian safety training, etc. Working together we are able to achieve more than individual schools.

We currently have representatives for 18 of the 21 Newton schools. Underwood, Burr and Bigelow are the 3 schools not represented.

The first SRTS meeting of the year is this Friday September 14th 9:30 am  - 10:30 am at the Waban Library Center 1608 Beacon St. This would be a good time for someone to learn more about the program. I am also happy to touch base with anyone wanting more information.
