Why STEAM instead of STEM? This year we’re adding Art to the mix, to encourage everyone to participate and to encourage creative thinking about how we view science and technology

STEAM.edu defines STEAM education as science and technology, interpreted through engineering and the arts, all based in mathematical elements. The “A” in STEAM is meant to be a broad term, representing not only the fine arts, but also liberal arts, language arts, social studies, music and physical arts.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR UNDERSTANDING OUR DIFFERENCES

THIRD GRADE PROGRAM
MONDAY, MARCH 11th

We need volunteers for the next 3rd grade understanding our differences program on Monday March 11th from 11am-1pm.

This is a terrific program but it needs parents to volunteer in the classroom to make it work. We really need your help!

Volunteering is easy – anyone can do it. Part of the reason the program is so successful is that it is designed to run well with first-time volunteers. Volunteers will take small groups of kids through learning activities – but this is easy to do because there is a script to follow and it is fun for the kids. You can get ready very quickly the evening before by watching a few minute video online and looking through the activity outline.

The whole program takes only 2 hours – so it is shorter and easier than a field trip – and your kids will love having you participate just as much as they love you coming on field trips.

If you can help out, please Sign up on the Sign-up Genius:

materials and resources. This picture is of the 3rd Grade Bag.

The Kaleidoscope Bags are intended to strengthen our community’s core value of
respect for differences. They will be available to check out of the library starting

Come learn about the new Newton Public School Equity Policy—Feb 13

Please mark Wednesday, February 13th from 7-9pm in your calendars, when the Burr PTO will host a discussion in the Burr Cafetorium about the Newton Public School Equity Policy changes and new limits for the upcoming 2019-20 school year.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Equity Policy, the policy aims to level the playing field among Newton Public Schools with regard to curriculum-related PTO expenses, which include Creative Arts & Sciences, technology, library books and more. In an effort to minimize the gap in the levels of funding at Newton elementary schools, new limits will go into effect in September 2019. Members of the NPS Equity Committee and School Committee will be on hand to present the details and answer questions about the new policy.

Drop-Off and Pick-up Tips at Burr

Drop-off and pick-up can be tricky, especially when the weather is cold and more people are driving.  Luckily, we have plenty of tips to help you learn all about the Blue Zone and more!

There are many ways to get to school:  walk, bike, bus, and parent drop-off. Periodically throughout the year, we like to remind everybody of Blue Zone safety and other important tips for drop-off and pick-up.

Just about anything anyone needs to know about getting to school can be found here on the Burr PTO website: https://www.burrpto.org/the-blue-zone

THE BLUE ZONE:

The Blue Zone are the two zones (directly in front of the school and directly across from it) that are marked by signs and blue paint on the curb. These are the designated areas for parent drop off and pickup.

PLEASE abide by the Blue Zone rules to ensure that dismissal and drop off is as safe as possible for our children.

Some helpful tips:

Students in grade K-2 should be picked up on the school side of the road. This will ensure that the teachers see you pull up and can get your child to you quickly and safely.

Any motor vehicle may stop in a Blue Zone location only long enough to let a child enter or exit the vehicle.  You can't get out to run them inside or wait to watch them go in - you need to keep moving!  If you need to do bring your child in or you want to watch them get inside, please find a parking space so you can walk together.

The Blue Zone doesn't work for everybody - and that's OK!  If that's the case, enjoy a walk to school or prepare to park and walk up to Burr together.

OTHER NOTES:

  • Don't let your child out on the driver's side - always the curb side.
  • No dropping your child off in the middle of the street.  Make sure you are pulled up to a curb, even if there's a backup.
  • Don't park in the teacher's lot.
  • NO U-turns in front of the school and no turning in residential driveways.
  • Pay attention to the signage surrounding the school.  For instance, on the school side of Washburn Ave. there's a no parking zone during school hours.  When people park there, it makes it difficult for cars (and especially buses) to get through.
  • Follow the Burr guidelines about dogs.  Please keep your furry friends on a leash and away from the school entrance and the Blue Zone.
  • Cross only where there's a crosswalk (and crossing guard where applicable.)
  • Together we can make the drop-off and pick-up safe for all!

Book Swap Collection

Book swap collection begins tomorrow!

We will be collecting books all week.  Have your child bring their books in a bag with their teacher's name on it.  They can leave it outside of the classroom for parent volunteers to collect.  Please do not send preschool, adult, or activity/workbooks.  We especially need books for 4th and 5th graders!

There are still volunteer slots open - the more the merrier!  It's a really fun event.  https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0d45aeae2ca5ff2-book1

You can also come when your child's class will be at the swap:

Lunar New Year at Burr - Feb. 10

We can't believe it's already February of 2019.  While the celebration of the Solar Calendar New Year worldwide is already behind us, the Lunar New Year is around the corner.

The Lunar New Year, also known as "Spring Festival", is still the most important festival celebrated in some Eastern Asian countries. A lunar calendar is based on cycles of the moon phases. The first day of Lunar New Year begins on the new moon that appears between Jan 21 and Feb 20. In 2019, the first day of the Lunar New Year will be on Tue, Feb 5th, initiating the year of Pig. Observances traditionally take place from the evening preceding the first day of the Lunar New Year to the Lantern Festival, held on the 15th day of the year which is the first full moon day of the lunar calendar year.

This year, Chinese American Families along with BURR PTO are coming together to host a Lunar New Year potluck party on Sunday, Feb 10, at 6:00 - 8:00 pm in the cafeteria. All BURR families are cordially invited to this biggest Eastern Asian holiday celebration.  There will be Asian Food, Arts and Crafts, Culture displays and Performances by BURR families /neighbors and lots of fun.

Date: 2/10/2019
Time: 6:00 - 8:00 PM
Location: BURR Cafeteria, 171 Pine St, Auburndale, MA 02466

Sign up is highly recommended:
