America Meditates—June 21, 2019

Join Mayor Ruthanne Fuller at Newton Free Library's Druker Auditorium on Friday, June 21 from 12 to 1 p.m. for a free event called America Meditates.

Take a mid-day break to meditate together. The goal is to raise awareness and inspire the public to stand together for the well-being of all. Taking time to meditate can help improve mental health, and studies have shown that group meditation can lead to a less violent and healthier society overall. Come as you are - no experience necessary. Appropriate for ages 14+.

Burr Newsletter from Ms. Johal—June 13, 2019

Dear Burr Families,

Today all K-4 students had ‘Step Up Day’, a time for them to visit the next grade level. Students met with the teachers and heard a little about the highlights the upcoming school year brings and they had the opportunity to ask some questions. There was a mix of excitement and nervousness. I’m sure you will hear about the visit today.  As you know, class list will not be finalized until late summer. They will be emailed to you on August 23, 2019.  Be sure to let us know if you want your child’s class assignment mailed or sent to another email address.

The supply lists for each grade level have been posted on the Burr School website. We will not be ordering the school supply packs this year. Hopefully, this early posting will alleviate the late August dash to get supplies and allow you to purchase things at a more reasonable price.

Tuesday, June 18th is the last day of school. Dismissal will be at 12:00 PM. Please be sure to pick up your child(ren) punctually because it is also an early dismissal for Burr staff.

Please check the PTO event board outside the school for summer activities. One fun thing going on over the summer is the return of the Burr Bookapoolza. The Bookapoolza is a fun summer event to promote summer reading. Students and families are encouraged to come to Burr to pick from a wide selection of free books that they can take home and enjoy. There will be books available for grades K-5, and parents and students are encouraged to spend some time hanging out, talking about books, and enjoying each other's company.  Incoming K students are also welcome. The dates are July 16th and August 13th from 6 -7 PM.

Sincerely,

Mindy Johal

Honor Your Child’s Teacher and Support Newton Schools Foundation

The school year is quickly coming to an end! If you want to do something special for your child’s teacher or other staff at Burr this year, consider the Newton Schools Foundation’s Honor Thy Teacher program.

When you donate to NSF in the name of one or more teachers, notifications will be sent to each teacher honored, as well as to the Principal and the Superintendent. Teachers’ names will appear in a special announcement on the NSF website and in the Newton TAB.  Look for a letter coming home in backpacks or donate online at www.newtonschoolsfoundation.org/honor-thy-teacher.

Your tax-deductible donation will support NSF-funded grants across all grades in the Newton Public Schools for teacher professional development, new and promising curricula and programs that aim to close the achievement and opportunity gaps. Grants are given in the areas of art, civics, math, music, science, social and cultural studies, literature, writing instruction, social-emotional learning and more. For a complete list of current grants and to check out a video on NSF-funded programs visit http://newtonschoolsfoundation.org/programs-we-fund.
