Nurse Best's December Newsletter

December School Health Newsletter

The school nurses are seeing the usual uptick in winter illness – colds, stomach bugs and fevers. It remains important for families to keep sick kids at home, in accordance with school policy. Students cannot return to school until they are fever-free for at least 24 hours, without medication like Tylenol, Advil or Motrin. These guidelines are also good common sense for adults in the workplace. The checklist below can help families determine when to stay home and when to return to school or work.

https://www.mass.gov/files/documents/2016/07/xb/flu-symptom-check-list.pdf

Along with the symptoms mentioned on the checklist, here are additional symptoms to stay home with:

Communicable disease diagnosis
A cold in the active stages – coughing, sneezing, nasal drainage
A sore throat and/or swollen neck glands
Vomiting or diarrhea in the past 24 hours
Acute pain that requires relief by narcotic medication
An undiagnosed rash or skin eruption

The Newton school nurses monitor illness in the schools and are available for any questions or concerns. It’s important to notify the school nurse of any diagnosed condition such as influenza or strep throat. It may seem elementary, but in conjunction with a flu vaccine, thorough hand-washing is the best way to prevent all kinds of illness including the flu.

How to wash your hands:

Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them

If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers can quickly reduce the number of germs on hands in some situations, but sanitizers do not eliminate all types of germs and might not remove harmful chemicals.

Flu vaccination for all people age 6 months and older continues to be recommended. It’s not too late get a flu shot. Call 617-796-1420 to make an appointment for vaccination with the public health nurse at City Hall.

Burr Auction - Parent Night Signup and Other Updates!

Parent Night
Join your fellow Burr parents for the first annual Burr parent night out for the auction finale.

Saturday, January 26th, Paddy's Pub, 6pm.

The Burr online auction ends that night at 9pm, so come see all the great auction items while hanging out with friends and having a pint or two. We'll have all the items on display including the class portraits. See which items have no bids to win big, or just come hang out and enjoy. Get your sitters booked, adults only, no kids for this one, and we'll have all of Paddy's upstairs for Burr parents. $30 per person, which includes the cost of the room, many passed appetizers, and a $5 donation to the auction. There will be a cash bar available for drinks. Sign up here, and see you there: http://bit.ly/burrparentnight

Community Offerings
The Burr PTO is introducing Community Offerings for the auction this year. Similar to teacher treats but with Burr families instead! Know how to cook? Maybe a cooking class for a group of your student's classmates or parents, or a homemade meal delivered to the winner's house? Good with wine selection? Maybe a wine tasting for a group of parents while the kids watch movies? For kids, playdates for a group at a jump zone or gym, a movie date with a few friends, a slime making or scrapbooking party? Breakfast at the Knotty Pine before school one day? Or just go creative and come up with a fun offering, to get to know the Burr community and contribute to the auction.

Class Self Portraits
You all should have received a cardstock square and instructions sheet for the class self portraits project in your child's folder. Please have your child draw their self portrait and return to teachers by January 9th. The portraits will be auctioned and a nice copy will be given to all teachers. If you need extra cardstock squares, there will be a stack of them at the front desk at the school, and the PTO will work with teachers to make sure every student is included.

Questions, please contact Laura Sexton at laurasexton1@hotmail.com.

Thank you for your help Burr Families!
