Over and Out from the Buzz for Summer!

Thank you for reading the Burr Buzz this year! We're going to take a break from emailing every Sunday, and we'll pick back up against in late August or early September.

Each week the Buzz is a collaboration between the PTO Board, Burr community members, and a dedicated team of Buzz editors who organize, format, design, and proofread each entry. Please give thanks to our 2022–23 editors when you see them––they are Marta BarrigaAlyssa HaggertyAbby HolsteinDave LievensKayla Noblecilla, and Spencer Poole

We hope that you have found the Buzz to be helpful and informative each week! If you have any feedback, or if you'd like to get involved with the Buzz next school year, please get in touch with Dave Lievens (dave@burrpto.org—outgoing PTO Communications Chair) and Grace Huang (grace@burrpto.org—incoming PTO Communications Chair).

Thank You, Volunteers!

What an amazing year it has been! Thank you to all the members of the Burr community who made this year possible. So many of you supported our kids and our school by donating money and/or time to help make this school year a huge success, and we are so grateful you are a part of this community. Your efforts helped support community and cultural events, amazing classroom programs through CAS and UOD, teacher appreciation, playground improvements and more!

We'd like to take a moment to give a special thanks to a few members of the PTO Board who are finishing their terms this year. Sarah Barbrow, Dave Lievens and Sonia Yung are all wrapping up after serving on the board for the last few years. They have each made Burr a better place with their efforts and we cannot thank them enough for all of their support.

May Fair Wrap Up

Despite the weather, last week's May Fair was a great success and we want to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped make that happen. We appreciate everyone's flexibility as we moved everything indoors. We couldn't have done it without an amazing May Fair committee, led by Deanna Salemme, including Marie Andrawes, Amie Butler, Evan Hoffman, Anu Jayanth, Seena Koshy, Gina Medaglia, Kayla Noblecilla, Alissa Saginaw and Jyoti Shah. In addition, so many members of our community volunteered their time to bake for the bake sale, run a game, sell concessions, set up or clean up, and more. This event takes a large number of volunteers and our community really came through.

An EXTRA thank you to Ms. Johal, Ms. Robinson, and Ms. Young for being such good sports and participating in the Pie in the Face—SO MUCH FUN!

SEPAC Awards

As you may know, each year, parents, guardians, and students are able to nominate NPS and Out of District teachers and staff for a Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) Award. A SEPAC Award recognizes exceptional NPS and Out of District teachers, aides, behavior therapists, psychologists, bus drivers, crossing guards, administrators, and other staff for the role they played in a student’s special education journey this past academic year. Are you interested in nominating an exceptional NPS or Out of District teacher and/or staff member? The deadline for nominations is Monday, May 22nd. Here’s how the process works:
  • Submit a nomination through this nomination form.
  • All celebratory nominations will be recognized.
  • In early June, your nominee will receive:
    • A printed SEPAC Award delivered to their home school
    • A note with the kind words you wrote about your nominee
    • A short slideshow of anonymized nominations lifting up the good work taking place across the district
  • Each principal will receive a list of nominees from their school
  • Do you need to nominate everyone from your student’s team? Please only nominate the teachers and staff members who you feel have been exceptional!
  • Questions? Reach out to: newtonspecialeducationawards@gmail.com
Thank you so much for your participation recognizing the exceptional NPS and Out of District teachers and staff who work so hard to support special education students. Please help us share this message as widely as possible so the SEPAC Awards can reach all corners of our community!
