Creative Arts and Sciences Welcomes Storyteller Valerie Tutson (5th Grade)

Valerie Tutson is a mesmerizing African American performer who uses dynamic storytelling and visual presentations to captivate students. She draws her stories from around the world with an emphasis on African and African American traditions. Her repertoire includes myths, folktales and historical pieces, particularly stories of Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad.

“The Right to…Liberty”: Ms. Tutson tells the biographical tales of three black people who lived during the Colonial and Revolutionary War periods: Maria Judge was George Washington’s runaway slave;  Elizabeth Freeman, a Massachusetts slave, fought for and won her freedom from slavery; and James Forten, who as a teen risked his life fighting against the British.
