Letter from SEPAC

I hope the school year is off to a good start for you! I wanted to reach out and introduce myself—my name is Eliza Spaulding (parent to 3rd grade and 1st grade students at Burr), and I am the
SEPAC (Special Education Parent Advisory Council) Liaison to the Burr School. I also serve on the SEPAC Board as one of the Co-Chairs.

In MA, each school district is required to have a SEPAC comprised of volunteers, who provides feedback to the School Committee and district on special education programs and policies. We also serve as a liaison between caregivers of students with special needs and school district administrators. We offer regular educational meetings that address a range of issues related to special education. In my role as the Burr liaison, please come to me with feedback on what’s working well for you, areas of concern, or if I can be a sounding board or resource. My email is: elizaspaulding@gmail.com.

For more information about Newton SEPAC, or meetings, and our online discussion group, please visit: https://newtonpac.org/
Our first virtual educational meeting will be:
Basic Rights Workshop
Tuesday, October 18th from 7-9pm
Facilitated by the Federation for Children with Special Needs and
Presented by Jessica Sales Cohen
For information on the topics that will be covered, please visit the flier.
The workshop will not be recorded, so we hope you can join us on October 18th!

Picture Day—Friday, September 23

Friday September 23 is picture day! All students will have their photos taken. Parents can order photos by returning the paper order form from your child's folder by picture day or order online here. Click Order School Portraits; then select "Auburndale, MA" and "Burr School" in the drop downs. If ordering online, you do not need to print anything off to bring to school.

We'll need a couple of parents to help keep kids organized during the day, if you can volunteer to help, sign up here.

Please Sign Up to Volunteer!

We are thrilled to kick off this school year and bring the Burr community together after a summer away. We have a vibrant and active calendar of events planned, and to make that happen, we need your help. We appreciate as little or as much help as you are able to give. Please take a look at our current volunteer needs at https://bit.ly/BurrVolunteers and see how you might be able to help make this year a great one for our community. Some of our current needs include:
  • Room Parents: McCool
  • Back to School Picnic (Thursday, 9/22): Setup/hand-out pizzas, sign up here
  • Picture Day Helpers (Friday, 9/23) 8:15–10:15, and 10:15–12:15
  • Creative Arts & Sciences—Kindergarten and 2nd grade coordinators, Overall Co-chair
  • Dine-out Coordinator
If you are interested in volunteering in the school this year, or chaperoning field trips, don't forget to ensure you have a current CORI/SORI form filled out. Bring your photo ID to the front office, and Ms. Studley can assist you with the paperwork. (Note: at drop-off and dismissal there is a lot going on at the front office, so if you are able to come a little outside of those times, that is helpful)

No previous PTO experience is needed! We look forward to working with you and getting to know you better!

Update Your Info in the Burr School Directory

Burr's school directory is a great way to find out who is in your child's class, connect with other parents, and make sure you receive important announcements. Please check to make sure your information, especially your child's grade and teacher, is up-to-date! You can log-in to https://bit.ly/BurrSchoolDirectory and update your family's information in just a few minutes.

New Parents Welcome Chat with Ms. Johal—Wednesday, September 7th

All parents are invited to join Principal Johal for a New Family Welcome Chat on Wednesday, September 7th, in the Burr Cafeteria from 8:20 AM to 9:00 AM right after drop-off. This will be a great time to meet parents, both old and new, and PTO leadership.

 THE BURR PTO PRESENTS

Thank You, Burr Community!

What a super year it has been! Thank you to all of the members of the Burr community who made this year possible. So many of you supported our kids and our school by donating money and/or time to help make this school year a huge success, and we cannot thank you enough. Some of the things that were made possible this year thanks to the support of this community:
  • Community Building: Fun community events like the Back to School and End of the Year Picnics; BooFest and May Fair. Amazing opportunities to share and learn about each other's cultures at Dia de los Muertos, Diwali, Lunar New Year and World Cultures celebrations. Informative and important discussions led by FORJ at Book Clubs and Movie Nights.
  • Educational Support: Programs that enhance the classroom experience like the Creative Arts & Sciences, Child Abuse Prevention, Understanding our Differences and Garden Days programming. In addition, new library books, teacher/classroom supplies, and teacher/staff appreciation and recognition help show support for our teachers and staff.
  • Playground Improvements: Significant upgrades to outdoor play spaces including new timbers, new accessible matting, picnic tables and a Gaga Ball pit help improve the safety, inclusivity and fun our kids and the broader community can enjoy.

Finally, we'd like to take a moment to give a special thanks to a few members of the PTO Board who are finishing their terms this year. Alyssa Haggerty, Pam Rajasekhar and Jenn Reale are all wrapping up after serving on the board for the last few years. Their ideas, energy and support has been invaluable through a particularly tough time, and we are so grateful for all that they have contributed!
