May Fair Needs Volunteers—Saturday, May 11

Rain or Shine: 12:00 to 3:00pm

If it is really rainy and cold we do it inside.

We know it is a very busy time of year and there is a lot going on at school, outside of school, spring sports, life etc......but PLEASE sign up for a shift now! We are looking for helpers to run games, supervise crafts, manage concession stands, etc.

The May Fair started in the 60s as a community building event led by some dedicated moms. Back then, it was a swap meet with simple games and a BBQ. It is STILL a fun community event!!

Please stop by for an hour or two and lend a hand and let the kids play. Any profit goes to the PTO to help fill in the gaps.

Please look at the list and pick a time slot that works for you! PLEASE consider signing up for more than one shift. Older kids can help you run a game but you are responsible to make sure the shift is covered. Please assist them.

CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR A SHIFT!

Bakers: Adults and kids, PLEASE bake goodies to be sold at the bake sale. We also need cakes for the cake walk—this year the theme is BOOKS. Or, find your inner "cake boss" and decorate a cake!

Can't make it or want to donate to the bake sale? Go to:

If you have questions please contact Justine Fialkosky at jfialkosky@gmail.com or anyone on the May Fair committee.

2019 Newton Schools Foundation Honor Thy Teacher

Teacher Appreciation Week is May 6-10!

If you want to do something special for your child’s teacher or other staff this year, consider the Newton Schools Foundation’s Honor Thy Teacher program. Make a donation to NSF in the name of one or more teachers. Notifications will be sent to each teacher honored, as well as to Mindy Johal and the Superintendent. Teachers' names will appear in a special announcement on the NSF website and in the Newton TAB.

Visit the NSF website to donate online HERE. (www.newtonschoolsfoundation.org/honor-thy-teacher

In the coming weeks, look for a flyer in your child’s backpack or in the U.S. mail if you have children in the upper grades. Your tax-deductible donation will support programs, curriculum and professional development in the Newton Public Schools encompassing art, civics, math, music, science, social and cultural studies, literature and writing instruction, and social-emotional learning. Thank you!

NEWSLETTER

April 25, 2019

Dear Burr Families,

It’s hard to believe that we are now in the final stretch of the school year with only 7 full weeks to go! These weeks will be packed with hard work and fun as we continue to work on goals that we have set for this year, and simultaneously plan for the next school year.

We have completed most of our kindergarten screening and had transition meetings for our graduating fifth graders.  In May, we will begin working on class placement for next year.  Please be sure to let us know as soon as possible if your child(ren) will not be returning to Burr next year, so that we can plan with accuracy.

The process of placing students is a long and complex one. The placement team includes your child’s teachers, mental health staff, and the principal.  The time and effort we spend weighing all of the factors reflect the importance we place on creating an optimal learning environment for each student.  We strive to have balanced classes where all children can be successful.

If you have any information regarding your child’s placement that you would like to share with the team, please do so in writing (please - no emails for this process). Your letter should be marked to my attention and delivered to the school office no later than Friday, May 3.  I will review these letters and share them with the grade-level teams. Your letter can include information about your child’s learning style, strengths, special interests, or any information you feel is important to share with the team that we don't already know. You may list friends that would be good learning partners for your child, but be sure to list between 4-6 peers from across the grade level, so that we can try to place at least one of them in your child’s class next year. Teachers know the children well and always make sure that each child has a few good learning partners in his/her class.  Please do not request specific teachers, as I am unable to honor these requests.  Do not feel that you must write a letter to ensure that your child's placement will receive careful consideration.

We will let you know of your child's placement in late August. The class lists will be emailed unless you request a paper copy be mailed to you. If your email address changes between now and August, please be sure to let us know.

Sincerely,

Mindy Johal

Our volunteer from the community, Evan Brunell, was inspiring and the parent volunteers made it all come together!

Thank you to Patty Devaney, Brenna Fisk, Fiona St. John-Parsons, Christine Dutt, Deanna Salemme, Annika Fockens, Lily Shu, and Tamika Olszewski for your time and commitment to the program.
