Volunteers Needed

As we close out this school year, we have some volunteer needs for next Fall. Please feel free to email info@burrpto.org if you need more information.
  • We'd like to get together a committee to organize the Back to School Event before we leave for the summer, as this will come up quickly at the start of the year. In the past this has involved pizza orders, securing a DJ and working to find an ice cream vendor.  New ideas always welcome!
  • We also need a couple of volunteers to lead Picture day!  This involves working with Coffee Pond, scheduling with the classes  and getting out the order info to Burr Families.
  • We are looking for a 5th Grade Coordinator for Understanding Our Differences - Help deliver 2 programs to the class over the course of the year. Solicit and coordinate volunteers, help run the events day-of. Each program takes 2-3 hrs day of and 1 hr of prep.
  • Web Site Editors/Burr Buzz Editors - Looking for a couple of creative, internet-savvy volunteers to help keep our website updated. Buzz  Editors rotate weekly to publish the school newsletter. This is an ongoing commitment, but one that doesn't take up a lot of time and is flexible.
If you'd be willing to help with any of these, please sign up here.  Thank you!!

Thank you!

This year was obviously like no other any of us have experienced! The 2020-2021 PTO Board would like to say thank you for supporting The Wolf Fund, volunteering for masked pre-packaged "bake sales" and raffles, playing online trivia,  being generous to our community, working in the Burr Garden, dining out at Paddy's or Food Trucks,  bidding on auction items, supporting our teachers, (even getting them COVID vaccine appointments!) shopping at Just Next Door, participating in zoom dance parties and attending PTO Community meetings! A big thank you to ALL our volunteers, and especially to exiting Board Members : Kyle Crossley, Lucy Galvan, Al Olszewski ,Spencer Poole, Leah Schwartz,  and Jon Spack.  We won't let you get too far!

Community Celebration Thank You!

Thankfully the weather cooperated and we had an AMAZING turn out for our Community Celebration! (We ordered over 100 pizzas from Pizza Market and over 200 scoops of ice cream from Wally's!)  Whether it was connecting with old friends, meeting new ones, or watching our kids run around the playground so joyfully,  it was so wonderful to come together again as a community!

The Student Council has raised $716 for UNICEF with great help from 5th grade volunteers. If you would still like to donate please visit our GoFundMe page.

We want to say a big thank you to  Pizza Market, Wally's,  Jenna Poras and  Amy Shen our pizza crew, our DJ Craig and everyone who helped clean up and took a pizza box home!

Burr Elementary School Move-a-thon—Wednesday, June 9, 2021

Who: Burr students
When: Wednesday, June 9th (Rain date June 11th)
Where: On the Burr School field
Why: Because kids can make a difference too!

On Wednesday, June 9th, students at Burr School are taking up the challenge to both celebrate fitness and raise money for UNICEF USA to support families in the USA and across the world who have been impacted by COVID-19.  The entire Burr School will participate in the Move-a-thon by “moving” around the Burr field.  Students can choose how they move (walk, jog, run, skip, dance, jump rope, etc.) with the goal of moving around the track the entire time.

Money raised by Burr students at the Move-a-thon and during the Community Celebration on June 11th will go to UNICEF USA.  Sponsors can pledge an amount per lap or pledge a total amount for completing the event. After the Move-a-thon, students will return to their sponsors with their results and collect their pledges.  Print the pledge sheet here.  If you'd prefer to make a secure, electronic donation instead of sending in cash/check, click here.

We will adhere to all our regular school COVID safety protocols. All classes K-5 will walk/move for 30 minutes.

Classroom Move-a-thon times:

9:15 - 9:45 AM: Ms. Canning and Ms. Oh/Raczka

10:00 - 10:30 AM: Ms. Golden, Ms. Fitch, and Ms. Espinal

Friday, June 11th - Superhero Safety Day!

On Friday, June 11th, we will show our *crossing guards* and *bus drivers* how much we appreciate their help getting to school safely. They have been with us through the pandemic, shifting schedules multiple times and keeping us safe throughout.

Please help your child make a thank you note and give it on your way to school on Friday, June 11th to your crossing guard or write a note to your bus driver.  Your note can be simple: "Thanks for helping me get to school safely!" You can also print out a card to decorate.  They will appreciate it so much!

End of Year Locker/Cubby Clean Out Tips

In May and June there are teachers and students all over the country unloading everything from their lockers, desks, closets and drawers after another successful school year. So where should it go?

Many folks do reuse, but for those that never really considered it before, please do.
  • Instead of throwing out the spiral notebooks that aren’t written in cover-to-cover, tear out the used pages, recycle them and then use the notebooks for the next academic year, scrap paper, etc.
  • Some use the spirals of used notebooks for art projects, in the garden and other fun ideas.
  • Those binders full of notes can also be recycled (the paper) and reused (binders).

Redirect those crayons...
  • Checkout this group in Illinois that takes pre-used crayons and sorts them into sets for underprivileged school children. Broken pieces are remelted into “super crayons” in larger shapes for students with special needs.

Non functioning erasers?
  • Click here to find out how to give those non-functioning erasers new life.

Books and books and books...
  • There are many book rescue programs nationwide in which they take pre owned books and find new homes for them (schools, children even the troops!).  Try your local library or do a Google search for the one in your neighborhood.

Not so crafty? Your kids probably are. Show them the spirals from the notebook, left over small pencils, erasers, old art work, projects, you name it and they will probably make some incredible recycled art with it.  Saved a tree, some money, and give your children the creative freedom to renew.
