PTO Volunteer Vacancies
Spirit Wear Sales- Coordinate the sale of Burr Wear at events such as the Back to School Picnic, May Fair, etc. Keep track of the current Burr Wear inventory and make recommendations for ordering new inventory as necessary.
Understanding Our Differences
UOD school coordinators organize the units regarding understanding and inclusion of people with disabilities. Units occur once monthly in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. There are usually 7-8 units per year. Coordinating duties include scheduling the speaker for each unit from a list of approved speakers, gathering care giver or parent volunteers and providing volunteers scripts and materials for the break out activity sessions. Coordinators may also introduce units and present activities when necessary.
Sleep Under
Collaborate with the Burr Staff to plan a babysitting/movie night hosted by the Burr staff. Publicize the event, coordinate ticket sales, purchase necessary supplies, and coordinate a small number of volunteers for event set-up.
Book Swap
Coordinate the donation of books from each classroom prior to the book swap. Solicit volunteers to organize books prior to the event and to help on the day of the event. Coordinate with teachers regarding schedules on the day of the event. Coordinate the donation of leftover books to charity following the event.
Green Team - Help solicit and organize grade level volunteers to initiate green projects and awareness at each grade level.
Safe Routes to School- Attend city-wide "Safe Routes to School" events. Organize/publicize events such as International Walk to School Day.
The Burr Wolf Fund: PTO Fall Fundraiser
Creative Arts and Sciences (CAS) provides multiple curriculum-aligned programs at each grade level. CAS is fully funded by the PTO. The PTO purchases technology, like interactive projectors, for use in classrooms. The PTO also funds other curriculum and enrichment programs, community building events, teacher supplies, the 5th grade fund and more.
You can contribute to the Wolf Fund by sending a check (made payable to Burr PTO) in your child's folder or here.
If you have any questions, please email the Burr Wolf Fund team at wolffund@burrpto.org

Newsletter from Ms. Johal - 9/20/16
It was nice to see many of you at the Back to School Picnic last week. It’s always a nice time to catch up after the summer and for families to meet staff members in a casual and fun setting.
As you know, we have had two key staff positions to fill at Burr – senior custodian and music teacher. A committee of Burr staff members joined me in interviewing qualified candidates and we feel confident that both of our newly hired staff members will be great additions to Burr.
Dan Diaz will be the Burr Senior Custodian. Dan graduated from West Roxbury High School and attended the Franklin Institute of Technology. He worked as an electrician before coming to work for Newton Public Schools in 2007. Dan has worked at Newton North, Newton South, Franklin and Williams. He is very active in his community and has coached youth football for many years. As a coach he has been a positive role model for many inner city young men. During his interview at Burr he impressed us with his commitment to keeping his buildings in the best condition possible (just like Jack!) and to maintaining good relationships with others. Dan is also looking forward to getting to know the Burr students.
Emma Barker will be the Burr music teacher. Emma completed a Bachelors of Music in Music Education at Berkley College of Music in Boston. She completed her student teaching last year in Newton at the middle and elementary levels. Emma has also done a fine job as the substitute in music classes at Burr these past two weeks. I look forward to working with Emma and supporting her as she develops the Burr music program. Please join me in welcome both Dan and Emma to Burr.
This year Curriculum Night is on Thursday, September 29, from 6:30-8:30 PM. You will have a chance to meet all the Burr classroom teachers, specialists, special educators and curriculum specialists. This is a particularly important evening because it gives parents the opportunity to learn about their child’s teachers’ philosophies, goals, expectations, curriculum, and classroom procedures. We have found that Curriculum Night is our most effective means of communicating relevant and valuable information concerning your children’s overall program for the year; we strongly encourage all parents to attend this informative evening. Participating in Curriculum Night is one of the most important ways that you can come to understand, and thus support, your child’s education this year.
Please remember that this is an evening for parents and teachers, not students. In addition, please remember that there is not enough time during this evening to have individual conferences with teachers; parent-teacher conferences will take place in October and November.
The schedule for Curriculum Night is:
6:30-7:15 pm Grades K-2 classroom teachers present
Specialists present to gr. 3-5 parents
7:20-7:40 pm All meet in the cafetorium
7:45-8:30 pm Grades 3-5 classroom teachers present
Specialists present to gr. K-2 parents
*Please note – Specialist will present in the Burr library.
Lastly, I’d like to ask you all to look over the BLUE ZONE rules for arrival and dismissal (http://burrpto.org/saferoutes/using-the-blue-zone/). These rules are in place for the safety of all our children and families. Recently, I have seen parents making dangerous U turns in front of the school during drop-off and pick-up times. I realize it is the beginning of the school year and we have many new families at Burr who are just learning the new routines. Please don’t take offense if another parent or teacher shares a safety rule with you. I ask for your patience with each other as we work together to get things running smoothly.
I look forward to seeing you all next week.
Sincerely,
Mindy Johal

Community Forum on High School Start Time-October 19th
Dear Families,
Last year, I shared information with you about the important work Newton is doing to examine the impact of high school start times on students. Since Newton began its work, several other districts across the state have begun to investigate whether a change in high school start time is right for their district. The growing interest in high school start time is a reflection of the compelling research demonstrating the unique sleep cycles of adolescents and the potential consequences of sleep deficit.
A working group spent the 2015-16 school year reviewing sleep research, investigating processes in other districts, and gathering survey feedback from Newton students, faculty, and families. Regular updates were provided to the School Committee, posted to the district website, and distributed via email. A final report with survey results and analysis was issued in June 2016. Click here for the full report End of Year Report.
From the research and feedback, the High School Start Time Working Group has created six potential “scenarios” for consideration. These scenarios move the high school start time later. Some impact only the high schools while others impact all schools in the district. These scenarios were presented to the School Committee on Monday, September 19, 2016 and can be viewed here.
The next step is for you, the NPS community, to provide your feedback on the potential changes to the start times. As a district, we want to hear your thoughts on the benefits, costs, and implications of any changes, as well as your feedback on the value of undertaking this effort. We have scheduled a community forum for Wednesday, October 19th at 7 p.m. at Angier (1697 Beacon St.) at which the Working Group will share information and listen to your feedback. We hope you will attend. We will also share information through PTO meetings this fall, as well as through school newsletters. To share you feedback directly with the Working Group, please send an email to: laterstart@newton.k12.ma.us. For more information visit the district website at www.newton.k12.ma.us/page/2553.
I look forward to hearing your feedback this fall as we consider whether a later high school start time is right for the Newton Public Schools.
Sincerely,
David A. Fleishman

Burr Flu Clinic: Wednesday October 5th
Burr Flu Clinic: Wednesday October 5th
The Health and Human Services Department is once again pleased to offer the influenza vaccine to all Newton students in Kindergarten through grade 12.
The flu shot will be administered during the school day at no charge to families. The flu vaccination program is free again this year because the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) is providing the flu vaccine for students, but we do request insurance information to help recoup costs to administer the vaccine. MDPH is providing Flucelvax, a quadrivalent, cell-based flu vaccine, for our students.
The nasal spray flu vaccine, FluMist, will not be offered this year due to updated recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
To sign your child up, you should return two forms to the school nurse no later than 2 school days before the clinic date at your child’s school:
1. Consent/Screening Form
2. Student Vaccine Administration Record/Insurance Information Form
- Forms are available online at www.newtonma.gov/flu or in the school nurse’s office.
- Students who are not signed up will not receive the vaccine.
- Information about the flu vaccine, including its risks and benefits, is described on the Vaccine Information Statement posted at www.newtonma.gov/flu. School nurses also have information and can answer any questions.
- The CDC recommends the flu vaccine for everyone 6 months and older.
Every year children are at risk of developing serious complications from influenza. Flu vaccination is one of the best ways to protect children from getting the flu. We hope you take advantage of this important prevention program. Please talk with your school nurse if you have questions about the flu vaccine or the changes to our program this year.

Room Parents act as a liaison between teachers and class parents. This doesn’t mean a lot of time spent in the classroom—much of the heavy lifting is done via email! The job varies depending on classroom and grade level, but teachers often ask for help coordinating things like end of year celebrations or chances for parents to volunteer in the classroom.
Room Parents also help the PTO spread the word to their classes via email about upcoming Burr activities and volunteer needs, like Halloween Family Fun Night, the Election Day Bake Sale and Gift for Burr.
If you have any questions, contact Beth Viveiros at bethnpaulv@comcast.net.
Burr Bulletin: Welcome letter from Ms. Johal
Dear Burr Families,
Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year! I hope the summer vacation was a wonderful time of relaxing and re-energizing for everyone. The children came in with energy and excitement this morning! It was so nice to have the school buzzing with their positive energy. I am looking forward to beginning this journey with you towards another successful school year.
Those of you who dropped children off in the building today, or came to the Burr Open House last week, saw how fabulous the classrooms and common areas in the building look, and as you can imagine, it took many hours of hard work to get it looking just right! The teachers, office staff, and custodians have spent the last couple of weeks preparing for today. I’d like to thank them all for their dedication because there were some extra obstacles to work around this year.
It is unfortunate that after all the hard work done by the city and school department, we still have some issues with our water. Please know that we continue to work toward a solution. As you know, we have water dispensers around the building and I ask that you continue to send your child(ren) in to school with a water bottle. Cups will also be available as needed.
Please note that the school doors will open at 8:20 AM each morning and classes will begin at 8:30 AM. This allows a window of 10 minutes for children to come into the school, unpack their backpacks, and settle in. The doors by the kindergarten rooms will lock at 8:35 AM but children will be marked tardy at 8:30 AM. Please try to get children to school as close to 8:20 AM as possible because children, like all of us, need that extra time to settle in and say hello to friends before beginning their work. I hope habitually tardy families can make it a goal this year to be on time.
Last week, I learned that Andrew Arnold, the Burr music teacher, accepted a position in another town and we are left with a vacancy at Burr. Luckily, Emma Barker, a qualified music teacher, was available to help out as a substitute for a few weeks while we conduct a search for a new teacher.
On Friday, September 9, we will have a New Parent Welcome Coffee. It will be from 8:30 to 9:15 AM in the Burr Cafetorium, so come on down after dropping off your child(ren). All parents are welcome to attend. It will be a time to reconnect with old friends and meet some new families. Current parents are always a great help in answering some of the ‘newbie’ questions that come up. The PTO board members and other committee chairs will share a little information about the school. We will also have a brief update on the water remediation plan. I hope to see many of you at the coffee or at other school opening events.
The Burr Back to School Picnic will be on Wednesday, September 14. I am looking forward to a wonderful year as we work together to ensure that each child’s school experience is an exceptional one.
Sincerely,
Mindy Johal
A Few Important Reminders:
Now is a great time to sign up for our online school directory! If you signed up last year, you don't need to sign up again but you should login to update your child's teacher, any changes in information, addresses, etc. Room parents will also distribute paper copies for individual classes, but you still need to sign up for the online directory to be included.
Newton's Life Threatening Food Allergies Policy: This policy calls for reducing/eliminating food in schools for birthday and holiday celebrations. For the past six years, the teachers and parents have thought of creative alternative ways to acknowledge and celebrate students' birthdays in class.
Student Absence/Tardy Notification: If your child will be tardy or absent on a given day, please call the "call back" number to leave a message: 617-559-9380. Please do not call the main number.
MESSAGES: Please DO NOT call the office to have us give messages to your child unless it is an emergency. With 400+ students in the building, taking and delivering messages overwhelms the office and disrupts classrooms. Please make after school arrangements and tell your child what these are, before sending him/her to school. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.
BLUE ZONE: PLEASE abide by the Blue Zone rules to ensure that dismissal and drop off is as safe as possible for our children.
Students in grade K-2 should be picked up on the school side of the road. This will ensure that the teachers see you pull up and can get your child to you quickly and safely.
Any motor vehicle may stop in a Blue Zone location only long enough to let a child enter or exit the vehicle. There is no parking in the Blue Zone before or after school. The two zones (directly in front of the school and directly across from it) are marked by signs. Also, there is a “No Turning in Driveways” policy for cars. Since most of our students walk to school and cross two school driveways or the Gazebo driveway opposite the school, we can only be sure of their safety when cars do not pull into the driveways to reverse direction. It takes a little longer to continue around the block, but please do observe the rules to protect our children.
Please do not park in the teachers’ parking lot. You want your child’s teachers to be in the classrooms and not looking for parking! Parking is difficult at Burr. To alleviate this problem I encourage driving around the block, car-pooling, walking children to and from school, having children walk across the field and picking them up on Lexington Street. Thank you for your cooperation. http://www3.newton.k12.ma.us/
