New Tween Programs @ the Newton Free Library

If you are the parent of a ‘tween’ then you are already aware of the distinct abilities, needs and developmental differences of kids in this age category.  At the Newton Free Library they, too, recognize this unique time in life and are therefore making a serious push toward establishing tween as independent from, yet equally important as, kids and teens. Tweens definitely don’t see themselves as kids, but developmentally they are not yet teens. They need not just their own reading material, but their own programming as well.

Starting in November, they will offer tween-specific programs for kids in grades 5-7. Check out the newly made tween webpage and coming soon, a tween book collection.

The first gathering of TWIG, a new Tween Interest Group, will be held on November 1st at 4:00 pm. We encourage all kids in grades 5-7 to join on the 1st Tuesday of each month. This will be a group interested in contributing ideas and having a voice about tween programs, services, book collection and more! Get in on the conversation, have fun and enjoy snacks.

Have questions? Suggestions? Please contact Liz and Deena at tweens@newtonfreelibrary.net.

Newsletter from Ms. Johal - 10/19/16

Dear Burr Families,

This month is flying by and as usual, there is a lot going on at Burr. Here are a few updates.

Math Fluency Week

This week we are celebrating math at Burr with Math Fluency Week!  In class, children are exploring a wide variety of ways to become more math fluent. This exploration of numbers, allows students the opportunity to discover strategies that work best for them, while increasing their confidence, math skills and number sense. You have probably seen some activities that teachers have sent home for homework, and hopefully, you are playing the game and engaging in the activities with your child(ren) to help develop confidence and enjoyment in math. BCAP is also partnering with us to emphasize math fluency during the week.

Parent Conferences

It’s time for parent-teacher conferences. I hope you have signed up for a time to meet with your child’s classroom teacher. The fall conferences are a time to discuss initial progress, set goals for the first half of the year, and to talk about anything that is specific to your child’s education. Below are some suggestions for you to think about as you prepare for the conference. They were taken from publications of the National PTA and National Education Association.

Getting Ready: Talk to your child before the conference.  Find out what he/she thinks is going well; find out what he/she thinks are areas for improvement, and why.  Ask your child if there is anything he/she would like you to talk about with the teachers.  Make sure your child doesn't worry about the meeting and that he/she knows that this is a typical expectation that the school has to facilitate good communication between parents and teachers.  Help him/her understand that you and the teacher are meeting together to share information and support learning.

Before you come to school, write notes to yourself about:

  • your child's life at home, any significant changes or information you feel is important for the teacher to know

  • your observations and questions about this year's curriculum

  • questions about your child's progress

  • ways that you and the school can work together to help your child

The Conference: Some good questions to ask are:

  • What are my child's strengths and weaknesses as a learner?

  • Is my child working up to his or her ability?  How is his/her effort?

  • Does my child participate successfully in class discussions and activities?

  • How well does my child get along with others?

  • How do you evaluate my child's progress?  What standards will he/she be evaluated on for the January report card?

If the teacher says something you don't quite understand, be sure to ask for an explanation. Ask the teacher for specific suggestions for ways to help your child to improve. This is the most important part of the meeting.  It will become your action plan.  It's a good idea to end the conference by summing up decisions you have made together. If needed, ask to meet again.

After the Conference: Start immediately on the action plan you and the teacher have worked out together.  Discuss the plan with your child; make sure that he or she knows that you and the teacher care.  To see if the action plan is working, watch your child's behavior and check your child's class work and homework.  (Young children need an adult to oversee their homework.  It's important to look in their backpack every night!)  Stay in regular touch with the teacher to discuss the progress your child is making.  Meeting with your child's teacher should help build strong parent-teacher partnerships - partnerships that are needed if you and your child's teachers are to reach your common goal: helping your child get the best education possible.

Burr Student Council

The Burr Student Council met this month to brainstorm ideas for school improvement and community involvement. We already have two of the initiatives up and running, Litter Patrol and Socktober.

Anyone can be on Litter Patrol. All interested Burr students are invited to join Student Council members to help clean up the school grounds each Monday. A teacher or parent volunteer will meet students at 8 am by the flagpole at the front of the school each week.  Litter Patrol will continue until it gets too cold to be outside or until the grounds becomes covered with snow. It will resume in the spring.

Socktober is a donation drive to benefit the local homeless population. Student Council is collecting socks, and any other new clothing (hats, gloves, underwear) and toiletries. There is a large box in the school lobby where donations can be deposited. This drive will continue through the month on October.

The Student Council Members represent the students in their own classroom and their buddy classroom. Here are the Student Council members for the first half of the school year:

SOCKTOBER Donation Drive

The Burr Student Council's newest initiative is called Socktober. It is a donation drive to benefit a local homeless population. We will be collecting socks, and any other new clothing (hats, gloves, underwear) and toiletries. There will be a large box in the school lobby. (Thanks to an awesome group of 2nd grade girls for decorating the box!)

socktoberSome Socktober background:

"It all started with a silly idea: Socks + October = Socktober!

In October 2011, creator Brad Montague realized there was a large homeless population in his hometown, and he wanted to do something about it. While researching the needs of the homeless community, he learned that socks are the items least donated to homeless shelters. So Brad took action. He began to film himself wishing people “Happy Socktober!” as he gave out pairs of socks on the streets, and he posted these videos on social media.

Word got around about these videos, and people wanted to know how they could help. So in a stroke of genius, Brad created a Socktober rap that could be purchased for a $5 donation to The Van, a group that drives a van around Arkansas to deliver necessities, including socks, to those in need.

Since then, Socktober has exploded! Kids and adults around the world have started their own sock drives to benefit their local homeless shelters. In 2013, Socktober teamed up with Kid President to spread the word and encourage more people to participate. Last year, participants on all seven continents donated pairs of socks!

Socktober will continue until none of our neighbors are homeless! Ready to help?"

Burr Water Testing Update

Dear Burr Families,

In our ongoing efforts to resolve the elevated lead and copper levels in the water at Burr, all water fountains and sinks were re-tested on Monday, September 26th. This testing came after the installation of a new stainless steel water meter and the removal of all aerators on fixtures.

We are pleased to report that test results show all water fountains and all sinks now fall within EPA guidelines for safe drinking water. Specific results can be found in the attached chart.

To review, the following work has been done at Burr to ensure the issue has been resolved:

  • Replaced service line to school

  • Replaced all interior cold water plumbing lines

  • Replaced all water fountains

  • Replaced all sink fixtures

  • Replaced water meter

  • Removed aerators

  • Posted educational signage on all fountains and sinks indicating proper usage

The City of Newton will test water fountains and sinks in the kitchen, staff, and nurse’s office for lead and copper annually for the next two years in all school buildings, including Burr. Water dispensers will now be removed from Burr and students will use the fountains for drinking water. Our staff is working with your children on safe usage practices and will remind them that only fountains should be used for drinking water. Sinks are used for hand washing and cleaning only.

Thank you for you patience as we have worked to resolve this issue. We are grateful to the parent liaisons who have spent significant time meeting with district officials, asking questions, and representing all Burr families.

I hope your family is having a positive start to the school year.

Sincerely,

David Fleishman

Superintendent

Ten Fun Facts about the Burr Wolf Fund

Ten Fun Facts about the Burr Wolf Fund

  1. The Burr Wolf Fund replaces Gift for Burr as the PTO's fall fundraiser.

 2. The date to be eligible for the ski package drawing is extended to Tuesday, October 4.* The ski package consists of Bolle Mojo Snow Goggles, Climate Smart long sleeve crew neck & pant, Luck Bums Snow Helmet, SmartWool socks and Thinsulate & Waterproof Ski Gloves.

 3. Every contribution matters!

 4. This year’s goal is to raise $22,000 by January 31, 2017.

 5. Why $22,000? Because that will pay for the Creative Arts and Sciences Programs and technology line items of the PTO’s budget. (These are the two largest line items in the PTO budget.)

 6. Creative Arts & Sciences (CAS) brings 3 curriculum enrichment programs to each grade level. CAS is amazing! If you can, go to a CAS program. Better yet, volunteer for CAS.

 7. CAS will cost $14,500 this year. CAS is required by Newton Public Schools and 100% funded by the PTO.

 8. You can contribute by sending a check into school in your child’s folder or using this link: http://burrpto.org

 9. Many companies have matching gift programs. Ask your employer to match your gift.

10.As of September 29, 2016, 22 families have contributed $3095 to the Burr Wolf Fund. A huge thanks to those who contributed early! It’s a fabulous start.

Questions? Email us at wolffund@burrpto.org and we’ll get back to you.

Thank you to everyone! We can do this together!

PTO Volunteer Vacancies

PTO Volunteer Vacancies

Every year as families move on, the PTO is in need of volunteers to fill vacancies in many of our programs.  Please consider volunteering to help lead one of the following:

Spirit Wear Sales- Coordinate the sale of Burr Wear at events such as the Back to School Picnic, May Fair, etc.  Keep track of the current Burr Wear inventory and make recommendations for ordering new inventory as necessary.

Understanding Our Differences

UOD school coordinators organize the units regarding understanding and inclusion of people with disabilities.  Units occur once monthly in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades.  There are usually 7-8 units per year.  Coordinating duties include scheduling the speaker for each unit from a list of approved speakers, gathering care giver or parent volunteers and providing volunteers scripts and materials for the break out activity sessions.  Coordinators may also introduce units and present activities when necessary.

Sleep Under

Collaborate with the Burr Staff to plan a babysitting/movie night hosted by the Burr staff.  Publicize the event, coordinate ticket sales, purchase necessary supplies, and coordinate a small number of volunteers for event set-up.

Book Swap

Coordinate the donation of books from each classroom prior to the book swap. Solicit volunteers to organize books prior to the event and to help on the day of the event.  Coordinate with teachers regarding schedules on the day of the event.  Coordinate the donation of leftover books to charity following the event.

Green Team

Help solicit and organize grade level volunteers to initiate green projects and awareness at each grade level.

Safe Routes to School- Attend city-wide "Safe Routes to School" events.  Organize/publicize events such as International Walk to School Day.

If you are interested in volunteering or would like more information about one of these roles, email pto-board@burrpto.org

Burr Needs a Safe Routes to School Rep

Burr Needs a Safe Routes to School Rep.

The Safe Routes to School Task Force is a group of PTO volunteers who are working to support safe and active transportation options in each of our schools.  This is a critical time in Newton for advocacy.  Many important NPS and city initiatives are underway that will shape our students’ transportation options for years to come including school reconstruction, school assignment, updated health and wellness policies, high school start times, sustainability and complete streets.  The task force can be much more effective if all the schools are represented.  Burr School is currently unrepresented and we need volunteers!

The task force is planning a special Open House on Friday, October 7th at the Waban Library Center from 9:30 am to 10:30 am to give current and potential representatives a chance to learn more about SRTS and to ask questions of volunteers and city officials on important elements of the program including fun ways to promote walking and biking, bike & pedestrian safety training, crossing guards, school buses, addressing safety concerns in your school neighborhood.  They will be joined by city staff including the Newton Police Department, DPW and others.
